Quickie Review - Lady Gaga's "The Fame Monster"!

Surprise, surprise. I love this album.

It's no secret that I love pretty much everything Lady Gaga creates, and this album is clearly no exception. Below is a track by track breakdown of each song from The Fame Monster and my thoughts - simple as they may be - as there is no disputing that this album is gold.

Bad Romance - Upbeat. Everybody's heard it. This song is MAJOR.

Alejandro - Upbeat. Definitely my favorite track on this album. "Hot like Mexico, Rejoice!"

Monster - Upbeat. Another catchy track from Miss Gagalicious.

Speechless - Ballad, Gaga style. I've only listened to it a couple of times, but it's pretty great. A bit different than what we're used to hearing from Lady Gaga.

Dance in the Dark - Upbeat. Hot. Samples a song I can't quite put my finger on. Love it.

Telephone - Upbeat. My second favorite song on this album. I predict we'll be hearing this in the clubs shortly. Features Beyonce.

So Happy I Could Die - Midtempo. Love it. "Eh hey, Eh hey, ye haw, ye haw."

Teeth - Midtempo. Only listened to it once, and didn't totally love it, but will probably grow on me.

All in all, GREAT ALBUM GAGA! Can't wait to see what the future has in store for you - this girl is single handedly reinventing pop. No doubt.

Quickie Review - Rihanna's new album, "Rated R"

I was able to get my hands on Rihanna's new album, Rated R, the other day, and I've given it a few spins (okay, plays on my ipod...) since and have come to a conclusion - this album BLOWS BIG TIME. Sure, okay, the album isn't a total write-off - as my review will explain below - however, for the most part, it just comes across like she didn't give a crap about this album. Then again, it would be difficult to top Good Girl Gone Bad, which in my opinion (and several others' out there) was an epic album. Anyways, I hope you enjoy my quickie review!

Below is a list of songs that are worth checking out on Rated R:

"Russian Roulette" - this song was Rihanna's lead single for the album, and although I didn't like it at first, this ballad has definitely grown on me.

"Photographs" - This is basically my favorite song on the album. Unfortunately, it's no club banger, but it's a smooth, slower song that features Will.I.Am. Definitely the shining moment of the album.

"Hard" - Catchy mid-tempo track. "Yeah Yeah Yeah I'm sooo Hardd!!"

"Te Amo" - Beautiful ballad about a lesbian encounter that Rihanna allegedly partook in.

"Rude Boy" - I only included this song as one to check out because I don't think it's a total waste, however, it's nothing earth shattering.

The rest of the album is basically worth skipping, but if you're interested, below I've given a brief review of each track:

"Wait Your Turn" - This could have made it onto the "songs worth checking out list", as I really enjoy the chorus, however, the rest of the song just doesn't do it for me.

"The Last Song" - Not bad. But nothing special. Another ballad from RiRi. Mediocre.

"Cold Case Love" - Chalked full of crime-related metaphors. Lame.

"Fire Bomb" - Definitely a filler track. Borrringgg. Next!

"G4L (Gangsta for Life)" - Rihanna's attempt at being gangsta. Not liking it.

"Rockstar 101" - BORING. Where the hell are the upbeat songs? She's trying to go for this whole rock/hiphop thing and I'm NOT LIKING IT!

"Stupid in Love" - Another boring, slow ballad. I'm sorry that my descriptions are so lackluster, but I'm not finding ANYTHING inspirational in any of these songs.

Rihanna...this is what I have to say to you: STICK WITH WHAT WORKS. Artists attempting to change their styles for whatever their reasons may be NEVER WORKS. Shall I mention Kelly Clarkson's My December? EPIC FAIL!

Back to the drawing board RiRi!!

New Lady Gaga - Telephone AND Video Phone!!

This is FEROSSSHH!! Two new Lady Gaga songs in one day. It's like Christmas morning!!

First up, my favorite of the two, Telephone is a new track on Lady Gaga's upcoming album The Fame Monster. This song is a super fun, upbeat POPtastic hit about not wanting that loser boy in your life to keep calling you while you're doing your thang on the dance floor! It also features Beyonce! Second up, is actually Beyonce's new track Video Phone, that features Lady Gaga. This song is also good, but actually not that great. I only listened to it once and although I usually enjoy repetative songs, this song is repetative in a bad way. It's kind of annoying. But who knows, it just might grow on me. Check it out HERE!

Timbaland is releasing his next album (Shock Value 2), and I'm eagerly anticipating this one! I loved his last album, as it had so many great club bangers like The Way I Are and Give it to Me. A few songs from this new album have leaked, and so far my favorite is Carry Out (featuring Justin Timberlake), hands down.

I think it's about time we heard something from Justin Timberlake, considering I can't even remember the last song he was featured on. And you can't go wrong pairing up with Timbaland.

Merry Freakin' Christmas

Today I went with my sister to one of those Christmas stores that only opens around Christmas time. You know, the ones that are filled with over priced decorations?

Anyways, there was a bunch of silly tree decorations on one wall, and I went to point one out to my sister when I accidentaly knocked a different decoration off of the wall, and watched it plumet to the floor, and shatter.

I have never in my life broken a single piece of merchandise in a store, so this was a new experience for me. I did, however, think retail had come a long way in the past, oh I dunno, century, so the idea of any retailer still upholding the "You Break it You Bought It" policy to me didn't seem logical.

Well, I was wrong.

Before the cashier even spoke after seeing the tacky Christmas ornament shatter, I could already feel what was going to come next (due to her awkward approach towards the broken decoration, and the sigh that followed - it was clear she was not fond of these experiences, as she knew what was coming next). "Yeah, um, unfortunately, if you break any merchandise, you'll have to pay 50% of what it's worth." Seriously? I mean, like, SERIOUSLY?! This thing was basically made out of popsicle sticks, nail polish, and glue, and was apparently "worth" THIRTEEN FREAKING DOLLARS. I ended up having to cough up 7.50, and immediately walked outta there in a huff, trying to stifle the anger that I didn't want to unintentionally direct towards the poor cashier.

But come on, is it just me, or does the "You break it you bought it" policy seem archaic? I work in a Starbucks, and if someone were to knock over a $1200 coffee maker, we wouldn't charge them a CENT. I do understand that Starbucks is most likely a larger corporation and has more money to cover accidental damage costs, however, "slapping a customer on the wrist" for accidentally breaking something in there store just seems absurd to me. Accidents happen. Am I wrong?

My First Month in Vancouver...

View from English Bay - Downtown Vancouver

So it's been just over a month since I moved to Vancouver, and it feels like it was just yesterday. I was unsure of what the transition would be like, moving my entire life to another city. Would it be easy? Or hard? Would I make friends right away, or would it take time? Well those questions have mostly been answered, and I'm pleased to say that things are lookin' good.

My first few days in Vancouver were...interesting. My sister and I were rightfully exhausted after our 24 hour continuous drive from Winnipeg to the West Coast, however, we still had so much to do. You know, like, unpack everything, buy groceries, go nuts at Ikea, and begin our "new jobs" (we both transferred with the companies we worked for, but were still a bit nervous for the new setting, new people, etc...).

After a few days of getting organized, I was ready to be back at work. Fortunately, Dawson & Gilmore, my new Starbucks, would welcome me with open arms. With a great crew and a beautiful store (only minutes from my apartment), I was excited to be a "new" partner at this location, and so far, my time with them has been great!

Robson Street - Downtown Vancouver

After settling in with my new apartment and new store, I was ready to really see this city. So far, every weekend has been pretty much the same - I take the Skytrain from my place to Downtown (about a 20 minute ride), meet up with a friend, and go exploring! Downtown Vancouver has so many different areas, and a million and one things to see and do. To date, I've visited Robson Street (a shoppers paradise - tonnes of stores, boutiques, restaurants, cafes), Davie Village (the "Gay Village", also has lots of shops, restaurants, bars - has more of a community feel), Yale Town (the trendy, posh area), English Bay (boasts a breath taking view of the water, right at the corner of Davie and Denman), Granville Street (loads of lounges, nightclubs, and stores) and various other areas. They have an awesome mall downtown, called Pacific Center, that thankfully has a Hollister and an H&M, a bunch of other random good stores, and The Bay and Sears.

Downtown Vancouver is also home to the best Winners I've ever been to. Let me tell you why. It's got TONNES of designer labels! They have this section called The Runway that has loads of designer clothes at discounted prices. However, even at a discount, I still can't afford them! Besides that, though, they have an awesome selection of all kinds of clothes, accessories, and housewares.

Sushi!

Lastly, Downtown also has a billion places to eat Sushi. Seriously, you can get Sushi ANYWHERE (and Starbucks, for that matter). Honestly, I've never been one to crave Sushi often. However, I have had more Sushi in the past month than I think I've ever had in my entire LIFE! I basically love Sushi now. Ha ha.

Besides sight seeing, I've made a few good friends, and I've only gone out a couple of times (can you believe I haven't even been to a nightclub yet?!?). I'm definitely looking forward to meeting more people and getting out at night eventually. And once snowboarding season begins, I'm going to be making my first trip up to the mountains and attempt to regain whatever snowboarding skills I had back when I snowboarded in like grade 9!

So yes, the transition for me has been relatively easy. Vancouver has been welcoming. This city truly is my dream. A city on the Ocean, in the middle of lush forestry, surrounded by picturesque mountains. I can still remember as far back as Junior High, telling myself that this is where I'd be one day - and here I am.

Urban Outfitters Saved My Life!

Unless you live in a black hole, at some point in your life, you've heard of Urban Outfitters.

When I first heard of this place (and visited it, at the Mall of America) I was confused. I had heard of Urban Behavior, Urban Planet, and now Urban Outfitters. I didn't spend too much time in the store, thinking all three stores were the same place and there wasn't much new to see.

I was dead wrong.

Since living in Vancouver, I've been to this place a couple of times, and I have to admit - IT'S FREAKING AMAZING.

Besides it having the most amazing collection of clothing and accessories (from multiple brands, some at incredible prices), this store has an incredible mix of collectibles, trendy gadgets, and a whole lotta other junk. I'm seriously addicted, and I'm trying to stay off of their website, which has an even greater selection of merchandise, as I am major brizzoke.

SO, if you've heard of Urban Outfitters and haven't been, or have not heard of Urban Outfitters and also have not been, I'm telling you now - GET TO THE NEAREST STORE!!

You'll love it!!!

Annie - I Know Ur Girlfriend Hates Me

P.S. Why is it that all the great pop/techno/electro music usually comes from countries that are NOT the US or Canada? I could almost rationalize moving to Europe just for their great taste in music.

Lady Gaga - Dance in the Dark

NEW LADY GAGA!! Those three words always make my heart so happy. At this rate, we'll have all of Lady Gaga's new album by the end of next week!

A new song, Dance in the Dark, has leaked. In my opinion, it's good - but not GREAT. It might grow on me, but I'm not counting on it. It samples some old song that I can't quite put my finger on, and there's spoken word portions of the song that are reminiscent of Madonna's Vogue. All in all, it's definitely worth a listen. However, Bad Romance and Alejandro - both previous leaks from her upcoming album The Fame Monster - are FARRRR better than this track.

Dragonette - Easy (Remix)

Aqua, Rihanna, and...Nick Carter?!?! Oh My!

Hey guys, I've just got a few new tracks for you to check out.

Aqua's song My Mamma Said was apparently on their greatest hits album that was released this year. It was an additional track, and they've just released a music video for it, and it's a great song. It's slower, and a little darker - much different from what we're used to with Aqua. Check it out HERE.

P.S. I also have some AMAZING news about Aqua. Aqua die hards everywhere out there can finally breathe a long awaited sigh of relief - they will be releasing an entirely new album next year!!! Thank freaking God! I've been waiting for this news FOREVER.

A Rihanna song has surfaced on the net, and it's apparently going to be her second single from her upcoming album. The song is called Hard, and I actually really like it. I'm definitely not feeling her current song, Russian Roulette, so I was very pleased to hear this new track.

Cheryl Cole Album Favorites!

Okay, so I just have a few last words about Cheryl Cole's album. I was able to find the whole thing online, and listened to each track, and am mostly dissappointed. However, I did find a few tracks that I enjoyed, and you can check them out below.

Parachute is a mid-tempo track, a little repetitive, but catchy.

Heartbreaker, apparently her new single, is actually pretty good. You can find Will.I.Am on this track. Also a mid-tempo song.

And lastly, this song isn't actually on the album, as it was a demo for Cheryl Cole

(not actually sung by her) but it seriously should have been on there. It's sooooo good and it took me a good half hour to find this track to download off the internet! Listen to Puzzle below.

Cheryl Cole - Stand Up

As some of you may already know, Cheryl Cole - a member from the UK girl group Girls Aloud - has ventured out on her own and is attempting to create a successful solo career. So far, I'm not over the moon with what I've heard, however, I'm finding she's another one of those artists who consistently release songs that are growers (aka. songs that you hate at first and come to love).

Exhibit A for me was her first single, Fight for This Love. I thought it was a total bomb the first time I heard it, but after a few more listens, I became hooked!

Now has come time for Exhibit B. The song is called Stand Up, and I honestly HATED this song the first time I listened to it. But trust me, give it a chance, it's actually very catchy. Maybe listen to it a bit louder, when you're in a good mood, maybe heading out to the club or something. Enjoy!

Mya - Everything or Nothing

I thought I'd share with you guys one of my favorite songs. A few years back I purchased the video game 007 Everything or Nothing, which suprisingly, had a star studded cast. Mya, Charlize Theron, and Shannon Elizabeth were the sexy ladies in this James Bond venture.

Anyways, the theme song for the game was done by Mya, titled Everything or Nothing. The song is so hot! I can guarantee I was probably the only boy who played that game and thought to download the theme song because Mya sang it. Haha. Oh well.....Enjoy!

Marina and the Diamonds - Mowgli's Road

I'm not sure if I've mentioned this artist on my blog before, but I only recently became aware of their existence. The lead vocalist has a very unique voice, and so far I've loved every song I've heard from them.

Mowgli's Road is their most recent release, and I've gotta say - the music video is AWESOME. You've gotta check it out for yourself to understand.

Rihanna - Russian Roulette

The wait is over. We can all un-bunch our panties. Rihanna's new single has dropped...

...and honestly, it's extremely disappointing (especially if you consider her intense cover art for the single, pictured above). I can never understand when artists make their return to the music scene with a ballad. It's never as successful as a more upbeat track.

Any who, the song's not a total bomb. I'm actually beginning to like it more and more each time I listen to it, however, it's definitely no Disturbia/Umbrella. Check it out below, and let me know your thoughts (aka leave a comment!).

Nick Carter & Jennifer Paige - Beautiful Lie

Before you jump to conclusions, I am highly aware of Nick Carter's solo career (or lack there of it), HOWEVER, this song is actually pretty good! It features Jennifer Paige (remember that song Crush from the late 90's?) and although I can only provide you with a one and a half minute clip, it sounds like they've got themselves a good track here.

Dragonette Concert Review!

So last night, I had the privilege of obtaining two tickets ($20 each - I know right? I would have paid way more!) to the Dragonette show at Venue in Vancouver. As usual, the show was slated to begin at 7:30pm (or so the tickets suggested), however, an opening band played until about 9ish.

Dragonette chose to start of the night with their most recognizable song, I Get Around. The performance was gold, and a great way to hype up the crowd for the evening. The band actually played quite a few songs through out the night, which was pretty impressive.

True Believer, my most anticipated song besides Fixin' To Thrill, was a great performance. The only unfortunate thing I'd have to say about it though was that they tried to rock it up a bit more than it is on the album, and I much prefer the slower version that Galore provides.

They closed the show with everyones favorite, Fixin' to Thrill, which was an extremely energetic, lively performance. I totally loved it, and was sad to see them go at the end of the song.

However, once off the stage, it only took about 30 seconds of clapping in anticipation for an encore to get them right back up there....and perform the biggest disaster of a song ever!! Don't get me wrong, it was cute how she stated that she sang this song to her husband on their wedding day, but the song was so banjo-country-rock-I-don't-even-know-what that it was definitely a ridiculous final impression to leave the audience with!

Throughout the show, Martina (the lead singer) was adorable! Constantly smiling, flipping her hair, and chattin' it up with the audience in between songs, she was so hard not to love. About halfway through the night it seemed to me that she was getting a sore throat or something to that effect, as she was having trouble with some of the higher notes, but regardless, she plowed right through them like a trooper!

All in all though, the show was a blast - definitely worth the measly $20 bucks!

This is why I cannot be with out internet. I miss IMPORTANT THINGS!! Like, not only did Lady Gaga cancel her tour with Kanye West two weeks ago (most likely because he's a douche and she didn't want to be associated with his douchyness), but she has now just announced a NEW tour that kicks off next month!!

The Monster Ball Tour is apparently supposed to be like some sort of "Electro-Pop Opera" (her words, not mine), but regardless, I'm SO IN.

She will be in Vancouver December 9th and 10th - yes, that's right, TWO SHOWS in Vancity.

Hey ya'll. I'm back!

Finally after acquiring my very own internet connection (and not some stolen, shabby wireless connection) and spending about an hour browsing the net for all things new in the past two weeks in the music industry, I am excited to share with you my most exciting discoveries!

First up, Leighton Meester is back with another single, this time teaming up with Robin Thicke (to be honest, I'm totally familiar with the name, but haven't heard a single song of his, EVER). The song is called "Somebody to Love" (which I instantly assumed would be a cover of Jefferson Airplane's song - alas, it is not), and it's a breezy, mid tempo beauty of a tune. Check it out below.

Next up, I'm totally hooked on Lady Gaga's recently leaked "Bad Romance". It's pure Gaga, with obvious production by Red One. I'm dying to find a HQ version of this song on the net, however, I'm sure it'll turn up in no time. This song is definitely a fun beat, so check it out below.

The time has come. The goodbyes are done. The U-Haul is packed. The moon shines it's light over Winnipeg one last time.

And I'm ready to go.

After 8 months of planning, my sister and I are finally heading to the West Coast. We'll be hittin' the highway at about four in the afternoon, and will be driving the prairies through the night. The tentative plan is to arrive in Calgary as the sun rises, make our way through the mountains during the day, and finally, arrive at our destination, the beautiful city of Vancouver, by six in the evening.

As soon as I've got internet out there (which hopefully won't take longer than a week), I'll let you all know how the insane 24 hour drive went, and how the city has treated us our first few days.

Until then, PRAY THAT I MAKE IT!!!

My Days in Winnipeg are FINALLY Coming to an End!

My new home.

Hey everyone!

So yesterday I got back from my 3 day trip to Vancouver. LOTS TO COVER.

First of all, my mission was to find an apartment, and check out my new Starbucks: MISSION ACCOMPLISHED.

My new store is at Dawson and Gilmore (as a reminder, I just think "Dawson's Creek" & "Gilmore Girls" - what?) and it's totally awesome. It's located in Brentwood, which is an area in North Burnaby. It's a beautiful store with some great staff that I'm super pumped to get to know. It also happens to be a stones throw away from my new apartment.

My apartment is basically unreal. OMA, otherwise known as "One Madison Avenue", is situated a block away from my new Starbucks store. It's a beautiful 20-something high rise, and is almost too good to be true. It's a 2 bed 2 bath, and the building houses an indoor swimming pool, hot tub, sauna, steam room, and gym. You better believe I'm expecting people to come visit me, as I need to make use of these amenities!!

The trip itself was quite stressful at first, as we had been turned down by a couple landlords due to inadequate finances. But then we met our new landlord, a sweet, older gentleman who owns the unit who was very understanding of our situation, and my sister and I were finally able to breathe a sigh of relief.

Although I can't be happier about what's to come for me in Vancouver, I have to admit, I'm really struggling with the reality of the next few days. I'll be saying goodbye to a lot of people I love. Some who are co-workers I see every day, others who are friends I see on the weekends, but all are people that are going to be difficult to leave behind. I really do cherish my time I've spent with you all, and I sincerely hope I see you all again. And if there's any one piece of advice I can leave for all of you, it's this: whatever it is that you've longed for all your life, don't let the opportunity to experience it pass you by.

So now, with just over a week left in Winnipeg, I've gotta say that I'm glad I finally made this choice. A choice I've known for a long time that I'd eventually have to make. A choice that would determine the trajectory of the rest of my life.

My life in Vancouver (and not in GOD-FORSAKEN WINNIPEG!).

Anyone know what I'm talking about? I think you do.

I have made it a common ritual that whenever one of my "Facebook Friends" decides to continuously post dramatic lyrics or phrases that directly relate to the their current feelings, I delete their asses.

Don't get me wrong, a beautiful lyric can be very inspirational, can be quite profound. But please, I know exactly what you're trying to get at when you're posting crap like "my heart breaks a little bit more every time I hear your name, and I know, that things will never be the same again." That kinda crap makes me want to vom.

Oh, and my favorite kind of status has got to be the direct comments and/or accusations at other fellow "Facebook Friends" like "you're a dirty whore and you'll never amount to ANYTHING!!" Yep, those status' are classy.

These are usually the "Friends" that I've questionably added, the people I either knew way back in high school and new little more than their name, or those randoms that I'd met at the bar who seemed fun at the time, but you really don't know a thing about them.

So a word to the wise: if there is any question in your mind of whether or not you want to accept a friends request - DECLINE IT.

Well it's apparent that summer has begun, as I've completely abandoned my blog the past month or so, and I apologize for that. To make up for it, this post is going to be really long and filled with musical goodness!!!

First, I'd like to start off with the song Strobe Light, By Luigi Masi. This song is a hot and sexy club track with a very sensual beat. Check it out!

The only reason I began watching it was because it's created by Joss Whedon, the creator of Buffy the Vampire Slayer (my all time favorite show in the history of life!), and Eliza Dushku stars as the main character Echo.

This song is a few years old, but man, is it a good one. It's always so great when something reminds you of a song you used to love but have forgotten about, or you find yourself searching through your music library and you come across a gem from summers past.

Well, this is one of those gems. Gabriel & Dresden's "Tracking Treasure Down" is so wonderful. I don't even know how to describe it. Usually, for me, songs being transferred onto my Ipod go into one of two playlists: Fast Mix or Slow Mix. What can I say, I'm a simple guy. Anyways, I don't think I'd be able to classify this song as either. It's just such a cool, mellow house track. So give it a listen below, I'm sure you will be pleased.

"Afghans protest new marriage law, pelted with stones"

A 300-strong group of Afghan women were pelted with small stones Wednesday as they protested against a controversial law that legalizes rape within marriage.

A much larger group of about 1,000 Afghans -- both men and women -- swarmed the demonstration to throw stones and shout at the women.

Police struggled to keep the two groups from clashing and even formed a human chain around the anti-marriage law demonstrators.

The so-called Shia Family Law allows a husband to demand sex from his wife every four days unless she is ill or would be harmed by the act.

Critics say the law, passed by Afghanistan's national assembly last month, essentially legalizes marital rape.

It also confines women to the home unless they have a male escort.

The law has sparked outrage among Western nations, including Canada, which forced President Karzai to issue a statement saying that he has ordered a review of the legislation.

If made official, the law would only apply to the Shiites living in Afghanistan -- about 10 to 20 per cent of the country's 30 million people.

Shiite supporters say foreigners are becoming too involved in the private affairs of Afghans.
On Wednesday, the counter-protesters shouted "Death to the slaves of the Christians!" at the demonstrators.

"You are a dog! You are not a Shiite woman!" one man shouted to a young woman protester.
The woman, holding a banner that said "We don't want Taliban law," did not shout back.

"This is my land and my people," she said.

Fourteen-year-old Masuma Hasani said her whole family had joined the protest against the law.
"I am concerned about my future with this law," she said. "We want our rights. We don't want women to just be used."

Meanwhile, 24-year-old Mariam Sajadi said foreigners were the "enemy of Afghanistan."
Sajadi, engaged to be married, said she plans to follow the law and ask her husband's permission to leave the house.

She said the parts of the law dealing with sexual relations between husband and wife have been misinterpreted by Westerners.
